FOSTER, R.I. (WPRI) – An historic church in Foster has been condemned after it was struck by a pickup truck on Halloween night.

Sonja Murray, Moderator of the Mount Vernon Baptist Church, told Eyewitness News that a pickup crashed into the front of the building at around 11 p.m. Friday.

The small church, located at 210 Plainfield Pike, is more than 200 years old and has an active congregation, Murray said.

The building sustained significant damage to the front door and the foundation; it was pushed off its foundation by about two feet. A building inspector condemned the building.

It’s not yet clear what caused the pickup to crash into the building; Foster police were unable to provide any other information on Sunday.
