‘I am Playing for the Glory of God’: Gordon Hayward Suffers Horrific Injury, Players Immediately Begin Praying

The season looked promising for the Boston Celtics. Stars Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving led a dynamic young team of talented players, all looking forward to giving Lebron James and the Cavaliers a run for their money.

Everything changed midway through the first quarter, when Hayward attempted to catch an alley-oop pass for a dunk. He landed awkwardly on his left foot, and everyone knew immediately something awful had happened. Hayward’s left foot was pointing directly sideways, causing fans and players in attendance to grimace at the scene. Even his opponents, the Cavaliers, were stunned.

Hayward is a Christian and has been outspoken about his faith in the past, including this summer in a lengthy interview describing that his primary motivation for playing is to glorify God:

“My parents (Gordon Scott Hayward and Jody Hayward) went to church every Sunday. They have been there for me my whole life. They took me to church,” he told the Alabama Baptist. “It’s always been a staple; something I try to do.”

In the article, Hayward said he’s appreciative of the reminders his mother gives him before every game, simply texting her son: “Remember Who you play for.”

“It helps remind myself why I am doing this. I am playing for the glory of God,” Hayward told the Alabama Baptist. “It makes life easier. It takes a lot of pressure off of you. My inspiration first and foremost always has to be God. I play every game for Him and after that my inspiration is my family.”

Gordon’s wife, Robyn, has Luke 1:37 in her Instagram bio. The verse says “For nothing will be impossible with God.”

Be praying for the Hayward family, as this is going to be a difficult road to recovery. Pray not only for him to heal, but more importantly, that he is able to glorify God in this trying situation. God is most glorified when we are most satisfied in Him, especially in the hardest situations. That’s so much easier said than done, so be praying for Gordon.

We don’t recommend watching the clip if you haven’t seen it, because it’s quite difficult to watch. The heartening part of watching the video, however, is Dwayne Wade could be seen kneeling in prayer on the court as fans and fellow players alike were clearly shocked and stunned. Other players from around the league quickly began offering their support through prayer.

Continued prayers and may his recovery be speedy!
